The 5 days Uganda Gorilla Mgahinga National park safari is the perfect opportunity to spend enough time with the gorillas and the rare golden monkeys in the Mgahinga Forest.

The gorillas fall under the ape family and are the third closest to man after the Bonobos and Chimpanzees of the primate species. The gorillas are very strong primates with muscular arms, wide chest, enormous nostrils and sometimes they are brown but mostly they are of black color. Most of the gorillas’ bodies are fully immersed in hairs apart from the face, palm, feet and chest and this well visible when they stand up tall and straight as they portray control, power and dominance.

The park was founded in 1991 to conserve the unique primates of Gorillas and golden monkeys plus other wildlife like forest elephants, and 180 bird species and 12 Albertine endemics including Regal sunbird, Blue headed sunbird, Handsome Francolin, Rwenzori Turaco.

It is a home to the Nyakagezi family which is the only family that habitats in the steep slopes of Mgahinga volcano, the family includes the rare silverbacks, only a maximum of 8 people are allowed to trek the gorillas a day. The fact that the park is located on the mountain makes the trek a little bit straining.

Relax at the lodge for a few hours before you embark on the Batwa cultural experience in the afternoon. Among the different tribes that have settled on the steep slopes of the volcano include the Batwa people who initially stayed in the middle of the forest but in order to conserve the forest they were forced to exit the forest. The Batwa people lost their original homes and became squatters around the park and in order to earn some money they started up a project to promote their culture and daily living. You are affectionately welcomed by the Batwa elders who take you through their daily life experience like hunting, gathering food and fruits, collecting insects, they will entertain you through dancing, singing, storytelling among others.

Return to the lodge after the 2-3 hours activity for dinner and overnight.
